Exfoliating Facial Treatment - washes, scrub lotions & stones

Exfoliating yourself at home is one of those “do-it-yourself” activities that allow you to avoid frequent spa visits. But how do you know exactly what you are doing? And what exactly should you be using?

Skin exfoliating products are one of the popular beauty products designed for different types of skin, and for different treatments. To understand your facial products a little better, it would be nice to do a short run-down of what you need before you buy:

Face wash gels/lotions – depending on what brand, and what they say they can offer, these face washes typically wash the dirt and oil from your skin and pores.

Exfoliating facial or body scrubs lotions – Lotions, creams, or gels contain tiny little beads that help exfoliate the dead skin cells as you wash and rinse. Body scrubs tend to have larger or heavier scrubbing beads for our body’s thick skin, while the facial scrubs are lighter to handle the delicate facial tissues.  So avoid using body scrubs on the face.

Exfoliating Scrubbing Stones – Aka pumice stones. Used to help exfoliate the dry patches of your skin that you would find on your elbows, knees and feet. Avoid using it on soft skin as it can cause skin irritation, leaving behind red scratch marks.

Tips for exfoliating your skin:

  1. Check with your dermatologist if you have any allergens before buying, also a dermatologist can be insightful as to what would be best for your skin type.
  1. Scrub in a gentle circular motion around your skin when washing.
  1. When exfoliating the face (whether it’s a gel or scrub), use lukewarm water rather than hot that will dry the skin out faster.
  1. Avoid using the facial scrub around the eyes, as that area is quite sensitive and delicate.
  1. Dermatologists recommend that it is best to use scrubbers (lotion/stone) no more than once every two weeks to allow the skin to heal. The skin takes about two weeks to create new skin cells.  Frequent scrubbing can cause skin irritation, to the point where we could be agitating our own flesh. Also, continuous stripping can cause the skin to produce more oils to protect and re-hydrate it, giving us an oily complexion.
  1. Use lotion after every wash to re-hydrate and nourish the skin, no matter what skin type you have. Lotion, lotion, lotion!
